KAL MARKS OVATION

Boston noise-rock band Kal Marks return with a new lineup, details of an upcoming record and a new single 'Ovation', about religious mistrust and manipulation. The first new music since 2018's Universal Care, their new album My Name Is Hell (out on August 5th via Exploding In Sound), sees the band led by Carl Shane, mixing up the lineup and adding a second guitarist. The lead single is a feedback-laden burst of noise, with unrelenting drumming and droning riffs that lead into the chorus of obediently repeated 'ovation' complete with somewhat ironic organs. Shane describes the meaning of the song and how his experiences with religion led him to write it: “I think religion has messed with my head a bit. It’s been a very long time since I’ve been a believer but it still has residual effects on me." He continues, "I still feel like God is looking over my shoulder and sometimes when I’m alone I find myself talking out loud like I’m praying. During the early part of 2020 I had weird fascination with televangelist videos. That world is far more extreme than anything I grew up with. The way the preachers move is insane and the language is so aggressive. If Gods love is so special why are they so angry. Their speech dynamics is really not that different from any historical dictator. It’s all tactics to trick people into buying something, and if you can get one person to cheer along you then can nurture and build up a crowd of fools. They make you feel like you’re doing the right thing, but I don’t think they care about saving your soul. They just want your money and loyalty. I know none of this very revealing I’m just blown away by the lengths they go to and how ridiculous they look." Check out the surreal part-animated video below. - Toby Evans-Jesra
